Sprinklers:

Portable or

 In-Ground?

If you are a homeowner, you may be debating whether or not to keep watering your lawn with a portable sprinkler or install an in-ground sprinkler system.

What to do?

Here are some general considerations:

Portable sprinklers are not necessarily the easiest or most efficient:

a) You have to drag your hose across the lawn.

b) You need to remember which areas you watered – and for how long.

c) You have to keep track of how long you water each area.

d) You may need to get-up before dawn – or water in the early evening – to conserve water, a process that can be time consuming or inconvenient.

e) Making sure that the sprinkler waters your yard accurately – without wasting water on sidewalks, your driveway, or the street – can be another hassle.

f) Oftentimes, portable sprinklers (Such as oscillating or impulse sprinklers) often waste water by throwing it high into the air, leading to higher rates of evaporation.

On the other hand, permanent, underground (i.e. in-ground) systems offer the following advantages:

a)  Set sprinklers allow you use water more efficiently by 1) Directing the water more precisely and 2) Using less water at lower spraying altitude, thus reducing waste.

b) You can water the lawn when you’re not home or, better yet, when you’re still sleeping!

c) Moisture-sensoring devices can automatically determine how much water your lawn has received.

d) An underground sprinkler system adds value to your property.
