If there is one thing many people can agree on is that the less one has to work on a lawn, the better (Green Thumbs not included!).
What are some things a homeowner can do to lessen the amount of work around their yard?
Consider the following:
1) Lessen the size of your lawn.
You can install rock, trees, additional shrubs, a garden – or even put in a xeriscape. By cutting-down the square footage of your yard, you not only lessen mowing costs, but everything that goes into maintaining a grassy yard: Aeration, fertilizer, weed control – not to mention lowering water bills!
2) Ask yourself: Is your grass competing with trees?
When it comes to accessing water and nutrients, trees and grass are natural rivals! Most grasses do not thrive in areas limited by shade. If you wish less maintenance, remove the grass near the trees. Replace the sod with such alternatives as mulch or bark.
3) Avoid planting grass in small or inaccessible areas.
Narrow strips of grass – such as between buildings, behind a storage shed, or between a sidewalk and a street are often difficult to maintain and water properly. You may wish to consider bushes or some form of ground cover.
4) Avoid installing grass on slopes and hills.
Grass planting on slopes, grades, or hills can be tricky to maintain — the primary reason being that water easily flows downhill and is not adequately absorbed. This may result in brown spots and even erosion. Consider installing a terrace, a retaining wall, and/or plants.
