An Introduction
Generally, there are two kinds of herbicide:
I. “Pre-Emergent” Herbicides
These herbicides prevent germinating weeds before they start sprouting:
a) Need to be applied several weeks before the weeds start to germinate.
b) A common ingredient in pre-emergent herbicides is, believe it or not, a by-product of corn syrup production (You will often see corn gluten in the list of ingredients).
c) Another common type of pre-emergent weed killer is soap-like fatty acids that dry-out any weeds.
NOTE: Both corn gluten and fatty acids are completely safe for pets & children.
II. “Post-Emergent” Herbicides
These herbicides kill weeds that are already growing.
Post-Emergent herbicides come in four major sub-categories:
a) Systemic – The weed will absorb the herbicide, killing the plant slowly — but surely!
b) Non-Selective – This herbicide will kill virtually any plant it touches – Make sure to avoid your prize rose or tomato plants!
c) Select – Kills only certain types of weeds.
d) Contact – Kills only that part of the plant the herbicide comes into direct contact with.
