Thinking of installing sod for your lawn?  Not sure where to start or begin?

Many people believe that installing sod is a quick, easy way to produce an “instant” lawn.

Here are some things to think about:

1) The soil needs to properly prepared and graded beforehand to eliminate dips, holes, and large rocks.

2) Once the sod is installed, you must be diligent and take care of it.  The sod will NOT flourish without your help!

3) Using sod is more expensive than creating a lawn from seed.

4)  Sod is generally less susceptible to drying out like seeds, and once laid, tends to cover any potential dormant weed seedlings.

5) Sod is often the best means of starting a lawn in shady areas.

6) Sod is generally cut into strips 6-8 feet long, two feet wide, and up to three inches thick. The actual area to be sodded requires careful measurement (Recall your high school geometry!) –with a little extra added-in for good measure…

7) The thickness of the sod is very important:  Too thin, it may dry-out quickly; Too thick and it becomes difficult to handle — and may even delay how quickly the grass will properly take into the soil.

8) Remember:  The time you install the sod is critical.  While you can plant sod throughout the growing season, it is best to install depending upon the actual type of grass used (There are both cool- and warm-season grasses).

9) It is best to install the sod as soon as it arrives on-site.  If the sod sits (Usually in rolls), the grass is denied sunlight, and actually begins to decompose – producing heat which, in turn, speeds-up the drying-our process.

10) When you order sod, it should look fresh (not parched), be of a consistent color, and be moist.
